About The Rational Investor
Honest, beginner-friendly investing education for Indian and US markets

Ambika Iyer
Software Engineer, Self-Taught Investor, Founder
Software engineer by profession. Self-taught investor by circumstance — a 2016 layoff, combined with a new home loan, forced me to properly look at my finances for the first time. My savings were sitting in a bank account at 3% while inflation quietly did its work, and I had no idea. Those three months on notice gave me the time to start learning: bank deposits, then mutual funds, then a demat account, then Buffett and Munger on YouTube, then screener.in and TradingView. I am still a student. This site is my notes made public.

What This Site Is About
The Rational Investor publishes in-depth stock analyses and investing guides aimed at people who are new to the market. The goal is not to tell you what to buy. The goal is to teach you how to think about a business so you can make your own informed decisions.
Most of the articles here are 4,000 to 10,000 words. That is intentional. A shallow 500-word summary does not help you understand whether a company is genuinely good or just popular. The depth is the point.
What We Cover
- Stock Deep Dives: Multi-thousand-word analyses of individual companies, covering their business model, competitive moat, financials, and investment considerations
- Investment Education: Guides on reading annual reports, understanding valuation, portfolio diversification, and core investing concepts
- Business Stories: Founder stories and industry analyses that explain how businesses actually work
- Indian and US Markets: Coverage of companies listed on NSE, BSE, NYSE, and NASDAQ
The Approach
- Beginner-first: Every technical term is explained. No jargon without a definition.
- Moat-focused: Analysis centres on competitive advantages using the framework Warren Buffett popularised
- Both sides: Every company analysis includes a bull case and a bear case. No cheerleading.
- Independent: No affiliation with brokers, asset managers, or financial institutions. No sponsored content.
