What is CAGR?

CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) is the single annual rate at which an investment would have grown if it grew at a steady pace each year.

It's the fairest way to compare investments over different time periods. A stock that doubled in 3 years had a ~26% CAGR. One that doubled in 10 years had only ~7% CAGR.

The Formula

CAGR = (End / Start)^(1/years) − 1

Benchmarks: Savings ~3.5% · FD ~7% · Nifty 50 avg ~13%

Why CAGR matters

  • Accounts for compounding — simple returns can mislead.
  • Always compare CAGR to inflation (6%) and alternatives.
  • Mutual fund "returns" are always quoted as CAGR.
