Before you contact anyone, it is worth understanding what SEBI registration actually guarantees, how a registered adviser differs from a distributor selling you products, and which questions to ask in a first conversation.

- What is a SEBI registered investment adviser?
- A SEBI Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) is licensed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India under the SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013 to give personalised investment advice for a fee. Unlike a distributor, an RIA cannot earn commission on the products they recommend, which removes a major conflict of interest.
- How do I verify that an investment adviser is genuinely registered?
- Ask for their registration number, which always begins with INA, then check it against the official register on the SEBI website. Every adviser listed in this directory carries their registration number on their profile page. Never rely on a screenshot or a certificate image sent over WhatsApp.
- How many SEBI registered investment advisers are there in India?
- SEBI listed 1,038 registered investment advisers as on August 3, 2026, spread across 104 cities. Maharashtra alone accounts for 38 percent of them, and Mumbai and Bangalore together make up about 39 percent of the national total.
- Does an adviser have to be in my city?
- No. Advice is routinely given over video calls, and an adviser registered in another state can take you on as a client. Proximity matters if you specifically want to meet in person. The distances shown here are to an adviser’s registered office, not a service area.
- Does The Rational Investor recommend any of these advisers?
- No. This directory reproduces SEBI’s public register so it is easier to search. We are not paid for listings, we do not rank advisers by quality, and inclusion here is not an endorsement.
